1. Adventure tourism tops US travel trends
The latest trends survey from Travel Leaders Group, conducted among 1,000 North American travel advisors, reveals that adventure tourism and active trips are the most popular among travellers, followed by culinary and wine journeys. Coming in at number six was women-only journeys.
2. Jordan reveals impact of embracing social media influencers
Becoming a vital marketing tool for Jordan, social media influencers have been found to have a positive impact on the country with overall tourist numbers up 14%. By sharing their local experiences on YouTube, Instagram and blogs, influencers are helping to put Jordan on the worldwide tourism map.
3. UK hospitality industry costs rise to 12-year high, says report
The 2018 UKHospitality Christie & Co Benchmarking Report says that controllable costs rose in the year to September 2017, to an average of 52.5% of turnover for restaurant, pub, hotel and bar business – the highest recorded in the 12-year history of the report.
4. Thomas Cook pledges to remove 70m items of single-use plastics
Britain’s third-largest tour operator, Thomas Cook, has pledged to remove 70m single-use plastics from its resorts over the coming year. One of the reasons for the change comes from the company’s customer research, that found the issue of single-use plastics matters to 90% of Thomas Cook customers.
5. Mӧvenpick to open ‘sustainable’ hotel in the Maldives
Mӧvenpick Hotels and Resorts has launched its first resort in the Maldives. The resort has been constructed ‘sustainably’ with built-in solar panels, in-house water production and plant desalination. The resort’s four restaurants will also serve locally-sourced produce.
